Payroll
Running payroll, payslips, PF, ESI and PT. Part of Margin Payroll.
- Who can run payroll?Admins and leadership. Payroll is under People → Payroll in the menu.
- How do I run payroll? In Payroll → Runs, click New payroll run, choose the month and click Generate payroll.
- How are unpaid days worked out? From attendance and leave in the same app: absent days, half days, unpaid leave, leave taken during probation and days before someone joined.
- How do people get their payslips? When the run is approved, everyone is emailed that their payslip is ready.
- How are PF, ESI and professional tax worked out?By the active rule pack: PF at 12% of basic from the employee and the company, on basic up to the wage ceiling; ESI at 0.75% from the employee and 3.25% from the company when gross pay is ₹21,000 a month or less; professional tax by the state set on each person's salary, from their full monthly gross.
- Can Margin make the PF and ESIC files?Yes. From an approved run, download the PF ECR file and the ESIC monthly contribution file, after checking each person's wages, days and shares on screen.
- How do I pay the salaries? From the run, Bank XLSX downloads the bank transfer file for your bank's website, and Export CSV the whole run.
- Can I change a run after approving it?Yes. Reopen the run, change it and approve it again. Anything it had posted to the books is reversed, so nothing changes quietly.
- How does payroll reach the books? An approved run proposes two entries in the Review inbox: the salary cost, and paying it from the bank account set as Salaries paid from.
- Can I add past months' payroll?Yes. In Payroll → History, add each past month's totals by city: gross, net, PF, ESIC, PT, reimbursements and head count.
- Do we need Masthead for attendance?Payroll counts unpaid days from the attendance and leave recorded in the same app, which come with Masthead Team.
