Margin Ledger · Every feature

Everything Margin does today.

Margin proposes the routine entries as bills, invoices, payroll and bank lines come in, and a person approves each one before it reaches the books. Everything here works today: the books come with the Books plan, payroll with the Payroll plan and both with Books + Payroll, and where something needs Masthead or an add-on, it says so.

Accounting core

Your ledger, where nothing is posted until a person approves it.

  • Finance home

Cash today across your bank accounts and cash in hand, the next statutory deadline, how many entries need you, and this month's money in and out.

  • Review inbox

Bills, claims, invoices, payroll, bank lines and opening balances each propose a journal entry, and it reaches the books only when someone approves it.

  • Trial balance

Every account with its debits, credits and balance, so you can see that the books balance.

  • Statements from the ledger

The balance sheet, profit and loss, and cash flow, as of any date, straight from the entries posted.

  • Opening balances from Tally

Upload your trial balance from Tally as a CSV, match any ledger names it can't place, and Margin posts one opening entry.

  • Loans and provisions

Each loan keeps its schedule so interest and repayments are proposed each month, and provisions hold costs you expect but have not been billed for.

  • Month-end close

A checklist for the month, from the Review inbox cleared to bank lines matched, and a lock that stops anything being posted to a closed month.

Purchases and expenses

Bills and claims, from the moment they arrive to the approval.

  • Bills and expenses

Enter a vendor's invoice, petty cash, a statutory payment, a card spend or your own claim, booked to a company and a cost head.

  • Bills read for you

Attach the bill as a PDF or photo, and Margin fills in the vendor, amounts, GST, invoice number and date for you to check.

  • Approvals by amount

Each bill goes to the right approver by its amount, under the approval rules you set, and on to the next tier when it's above their limit.

  • Late approvals escalated

After 48 hours with no answer, an expense goes up to an admin, and the people it was waiting on are told in the app and by email.

  • Expense claims

People claim money back with the receipt, and approved claims are paid with the next salary or in a separate payment run.

  • Recurring bills

Set up a monthly, quarterly or yearly bill once; Margin drafts it each time, and can book its cost to the right month when the bill is late.

  • Payables by age

What you owe each vendor by age, every open bill, a check that the books agree with the bills, and each vendor's ledger.

Banking

Bank accounts, statements, payments and reconciliation.

  • Bank statement upload

Upload the statement from your bank's website as a CSV or text file; Margin reads the common layouts and skips lines it already has.

  • Bank recon

Each statement line is matched with a payment run, a bill, a receipt or a rule, and you keep the suggestion or choose the account yourself.

  • Payment runs

Tick approved bills, make a payment run, download the bank file to upload to your bank, then add the UTR once the bank has paid.

  • Bank file templates

Templates for HDFC and ICICI bulk payments to start with, and your own in CSV or XLSX for any other bank.

  • Vendor bank changes checked

A vendor's new bank details wait out a cooling-off period, and finance and admins are emailed a link to stop the change if it looks wrong.

  • Card statements

Upload a company card statement as a PDF or picture, and Margin matches it with the expenses entered and shows what is missing on either side.

  • Transfers between accounts

Money moved between your own accounts goes through review and approval, then is matched on both statements.

Sales

GST invoices, what customers owe, and getting paid.

  • GST invoices

Lines with HSN or SAC, quantity, price and GST rate, with GST split into CGST and SGST or IGST from your state and the customer's.

  • Invoice series

A prefix and financial year for each GST registration, so issued invoices are numbered in order, such as INV/2026-27/0001.

  • Customers and balances

Each customer's billing name, GST number and state, with their opening balances uploaded from a CSV.

  • Receivables by age

What each customer owes, from 0 to 30 days and older, with receipts recorded against their invoices.

  • Reminders to customers

Send a customer a reminder from Receivables, and every one is kept with the exact words sent.

  • Revenue from your invoices

Issued invoices, less credit notes, are your revenue in the P&L, the board pack and your GST returns.

GST

Worked out from your books, for you or your CA to file on the portal.

  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B

Worked out for each month from the sales invoices and credit notes you issue in Margin, your bills and GSTR-2B.

  • Filed figures checked

Record the figures your CA filed, and Margin shows whether the books agree.

  • GSTR-2B matching

Upload GSTR-2B to see which vendors haven't filed and which bills can't claim credit yet, with a reminder if it isn't in by the 16th.

  • Vendor credit and debit notes

Record a vendor's credit or debit note against the original invoice, with its GST and reason, and send it for approval.

  • GST numbers by state

Add a GST number for each state you're registered in; invoice series, returns and GSTR-2B uploads use them.

  • Statutory calendar

TDS deposit on the 7th, GSTR-1 on the 11th, PF and ESI on the 15th, GSTR-3B on the 20th, professional tax on the 28th and advance tax each quarter, with the next one on Finance home.

TDS

Deducted on bills and salaries, deposited by challan and returned each quarter.

  • TDS on vendor bills

Each bill carries its TDS section and rate, such as 194C, 194J or 194I, with a default for each vendor, and TDS comes off what you pay.

  • TDS on salaryPayroll

Worked out under the new regime by default and spread over the remaining months, or set by hand for someone on the old regime.

  • TDS challans

Record each challan with its CIN, allocate the deductions it paid, and see which deductions aren't on a challan yet.

  • 26Q and 24Q returns

Generate the quarterly return file, 26Q for vendors and 24Q for salaries, for your CA to check and file.

  • Form 16Payroll

Each person's certificate for the financial year, made from approved, locked payroll runs.

Payroll

Salaries worked out, checked and locked each month.

  • Payroll runs

Generate the month's run, check the warnings for missing PAN or bank details, joiners and leavers, then approve and lock it.

  • Unpaid days from attendanceWith Masthead Team

Absent days, half days and unpaid leave are counted from attendance and leave, with Trace showing the record behind each day.

  • Unpaid days by hand

Override LOP days on anyone's line, with a reason, when there's no attendance to count or a figure needs correcting.

  • PF, ESI and professional tax

Worked out by the year's rule pack, with the PF ECR and ESIC contribution files to download for the portals.

  • Payslips and salary file

Everyone is emailed when the run is approved and can download their payslip as a PDF, and you download the bank file to pay salaries.

  • Salary entries for the booksBooks + Payroll

An approved run proposes the salary cost and its payment as two entries in the Review inbox.

  • Reopen with a trail

Reopen an approved run to change it; what it had posted is reversed, and the run's history keeps every change and who made it.

Salaries and pay reviews

Salary structures, income tax declarations, salary bands and increments.

  • Salary structures

Basic, HRA and allowances on each person's record, with the date they apply from, and every change kept in the audit log.

  • Tax declarations

Each person chooses the new regime or asks for a manual monthly TDS, and sees their estimated tax and the TDS paid so far.

  • Tax review

Everyone's regime, estimated yearly tax, monthly TDS and TDS paid so far on one page, with an override where it's needed.

  • Salary bands

A minimum, midpoint and maximum for each role, level and city, with every person shown below, in or above their band.

  • Increment cycles

Propose each rise with its reason against a budget, approve it, then apply the cycle with each increment letter ready.

  • Compensation ratios

Compa-ratio by designation, the spread of pay, and people paid less than someone with less experience.

Reports and the board pack

The month in numbers, for you, your board and your investors.

  • Monthly board pack

The P&L by company, the trend over 6 to 24 months and the balance sheet, with your commentary, to share with your investors.

  • P&L in layers

Revenue, then direct, acquisition and fixed costs as CM1 to CM3, then EBITDA and net profit, by month, quarter or year.

  • Cash-flow forecast

Your bank balance over the next 90 days, with best, likely and worst cases, and a warning when the 30-day figure drops below your alert level.

  • Finance dashboard

This month's spend against budget by category, the approvals waiting, and bills due in the next seven days.

  • Budgets by cost head

Upload a budget by cost head and month; an expense that would take the month over it needs an approved exception.

  • Your own reports

Ready reports, such as unpaid bills by age, top vendors and TDS by section, to run or download as CSV, and your own saved alongside.

Your team and your CA

Who opens the finance pages, what each role can change, and how your CA works with you.

  • Finance roles

Admin, Leadership and Finance roles and board members open the finance pages; everyone else can still claim expenses, see payslips and fill in a tax declaration.

  • Permissions by role

Choose what each role can do, from approving expenses at each tier to seeing vendor bank details or posting to the ledger.

  • Your CA's own sign-in

Add your CA with the Finance role, and they sign in to the same books with 1936 AI, using their own email.

  • Approval delegations

Hand your expense approvals to someone for a set time while you are away.

  • Tally export

Pick the dates and make a file to import into Tally; each expense goes once, so a re-run takes only new and corrected ones.

  • Tally mapping

Set the Tally ledger name once for each cost head, vendor, GST rate, TDS section, bank account and card.

  • Tie-out with your CA

Upload your CA's trial balance for any date, and Margin compares it with its own, account by account.
